I’m sipping a mango iced tea in Maui. Now if I were using poetic license, I would tell you I’m eating traditional Hawaiian fare. But the truth is, I’m gorging on some delicious spaghetti and meatballs at a nice little Italian bistro on the beach.
You know I have been to Hawaii at least 20 times, and it still gives me the same thrill every time I get here. Actually it starts as soon as I see one of the islands from the windows of the jet as we circle for landing. There is simply no place on earth like it.
In Hollywood, I live on the Atlantic Ocean, and my new place in South Beach is on the bay with a view of Star Island. Yet there is just something still magical here. As I was eating tonight, it kind of dawned on me.
EVERYONE acts different here. Take the most tightly-wound accountant from the mainland and he transforms the second he lands here. Back home his whole life may be numbers and equations. But once he steps foot on Hawaiian soil, he’s like, “Hey dude, let’s have another pina colada.”
Things that seem like life and death on the mainland just don’t seem to matter here. Even the Delta flight attendants wear shell necklaces, floral aprons and act differently on the flights to Hawaii. Yesterday the one from LA cautioned us about wearing enough sunscreen and had all the passengers practicing “Aloha.” They just don’t do those kinds of things on Delta.
In Florida, the beach is yards of white sand, suntan lotion stands, and millions of shops selling profane t-shirts. In Maui, the beach is a sliver of sand behind the brush, after you climb down the lava rock cliff.
This would be a good place to be a cat, because there are more birds here than I have ever seen anywhere except rainforests!
I’m here for a week of softball. I was drafted by an Orlando team coming here for an annual over-40 tournament. (So there are some benefits to being “mature!”) A couple of these guys are from the Super Majors league, where they get paid to play and have bat contracts, so it will be interesting to see how I match up. Our first game is tonight.
Hawaii is one of those places that are so unique, unless you experience them, you just have no idea what you’re missing.
Besides the Aloha state, I think of NYC, Australia, San Francisco, Paris, Las Vegas, London, and Alaska. Walking down Broadway, seeing the Vegas strip at night, or cruising by the Sydney Opera house are experiences that you will never forget.
Each of these places is its own special world, like nowhere else. If you haven’t been to all of them by the time you’re 35, it’s time to pick up the pace!
